The Complete Eyelash Extension Aftercare Guide: Make Your Lashes Last
You've just spent two hours getting a gorgeous set of lash extensions. Now what? The way you care for your lashes in the hours and days after your appointment is the single biggest factor in how long they last and how good they look between fills.
Whether you got your lashes done at Henny Lash in Lake Forest, or at one of the larger studios like Amazing Lash Studio or The Lash Lounge, these aftercare principles are universal.
The First 24-48 Hours: The Critical Window
Lash adhesive takes time to fully cure. During the first 24 to 48 hours, the bond between the extension and your natural lash is still setting. This is when your lashes are most vulnerable.
- Don't get them wet. Avoid showers hitting your face directly, swimming, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 24 hours. If you live in Baker Ranch or anywhere in Orange County, that also means being careful around hot tub steam.
- Don't touch them. It's tempting to admire them with your fingers. Resist. The oils from your hands weaken adhesive bonds.
- Don't apply eye makeup. Skip mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow for the first 48 hours.
- Sleep on your back. If you're a side or stomach sleeper, try sleeping on your back for the first two nights. A silk pillowcase helps if you can't stay on your back.
Daily Lash Care Routine
Once your lashes have cured, a simple daily routine keeps them looking salon-fresh.
1. Clean Your Lashes Daily
This is the most important aftercare step, and the one most people skip. Dirty lashes don't last. Oil, makeup residue, dead skin cells, and environmental debris accumulate along your lash line and break down the adhesive bond.
Use a dedicated lash cleanser or a gentle, oil-free foaming cleanser. Apply it with a soft cleansing brush, working along the lash line in gentle downward strokes. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Clean lashes are happy lashes. Our clients who cleanse daily consistently get 3 to 4 weeks of retention. Clients who skip cleaning often lose extensions within 2 weeks.
2. Brush Them Every Morning
Use a clean spoolie brush (we give you one at your appointment) to gently comb through your lashes each morning. This separates any lashes that may have crossed overnight and keeps everything aligned and fluffy.
Brush from the middle to the tips, never from the base. Light strokes only.
3. Avoid Oil-Based Products Around Your Eyes
Oil is the enemy of lash adhesive. Check the ingredient lists of your skincare products, especially:
- Makeup removers (use micellar water instead)
- Eye creams and serums
- Sunscreen (apply carefully, avoiding the lash line)
- Cleansers (look for "oil-free" formulations)
Coconut oil, argan oil, mineral oil, and any petroleum-based ingredients will dissolve lash adhesive over time.
Lifestyle Tips for Better Retention
Exercise and Swimming
You can absolutely work out with lash extensions. If you exercise regularly at one of the Baker Ranch or Foothill Ranch gyms, just pat your face dry afterward rather than rubbing. For swimming, goggles protect your lashes from chlorine and salt water. Rinse your lashes with fresh water after any pool or ocean swim.
Makeup
Most of our clients find they need far less eye makeup with extensions. If you do wear makeup:
- Skip mascara entirely (especially waterproof formulas, which require oil-based removers)
- Use powder-based eyeshadow rather than cream
- Apply eyeliner above the lash line, not between the lashes
- Remove makeup with oil-free micellar water on a cotton pad, pressing gently rather than wiping
Sleep
A silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction on your lashes while you sleep. If you're a dedicated side sleeper, a contoured lash pillow keeps your face off the pillow surface entirely. Many of our Ladera Ranch and Mission Viejo clients swear by silk pillowcases for both lash retention and skin health.
When to Schedule Your Fill
Natural lashes shed on a cycle. You lose 2 to 5 natural lashes per eye every day, and each one takes its extension with it. A fill appointment replaces these lost extensions and keeps your set looking full.
- Classic sets: Fill every 2-3 weeks
- Hybrid sets: Fill every 2-3 weeks
- Volume sets: Fill every 2-3 weeks
If you wait longer than 3-4 weeks, you may need a full set rather than a fill, since too many extensions will have shed to build back up efficiently.
Signs Something Isn't Right
Contact your lash artist if you notice:
- Redness, swelling, or itching that persists beyond the first few hours
- Extensions clumping together (lashes should never be stuck to each other)
- Significant lash loss on one eye but not the other
- Discomfort when blinking
These could indicate an adhesive sensitivity, improper application, or an eye health issue that needs attention.
